AI Prompting for Strategic Patent Work

15 years in patent work and there's one question that never leaves the back of my mind: how do I know which patents actually matter? In 2 weeks, I'm hosting a 1-hour California CLE approved webinar on how to get the most out of AI today to do strategic patent work.

For most of my career, patent value was a black box. You know the story: you’d file patents, maintain on autopilot, and hope the right ones are there when you need them. And there's the dreaded slow feedback loop: you might not learn a patent was valuable (or worthless) until a decade after filing.

Sorry to contribute to the hype cycle, but yes, AI now gives everyone a patent expert in their pocket. Some may think the technology cannot be trusted. They are right to be concerned if they find hallucinations in the outputs. But, these are solvable problems, and I'll share how we solve them.

I’ll cover 3 major workflows: invention intake, continuation recommendations, and claim charting.

The prompts themselves are only half of the equation. The other half is what input goes into the prompts, how you process the inputs and outputs, and when a single prompt works versus when you need to chain multiple prompts together. I'll go deep on the one thing to remember about every AI tool (hint: context window), techniques to reduce hallucination, and sample prompts you can copy directly into your workflow.

All of these learnings came from trial and error working with millions of patents. Some of this stuff is simple. If you're not already doing it, you can paste it into your prompts today and see immediately better output.
